In this powerful conversation, Dr. Lin Lu shares her journey from running away from her sister's mental illness in China to becoming a compassionate psychiatrist who treats patients across the entire lifespan—from preschoolers to octogenarians.
Dr. Lu's approach to psychiatry is refreshingly human. She doesn't see patients—she sees friends, neighbors, and family. This isn't just semantics; it reflects a philosophy that breaking down barriers between clinician and patient creates space for real healing. Dr. Lu balances optimism about technological advances—like AI and brain-computer interfaces—with her belief in the irreplaceable value of human connection. She's excited about tools like ChatGPT and Neuralink's potential to help people with conditions like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Yet she argues convincingly that AI will never replace human clinicians because it lacks two essential elements: a moral compass rooted in shared human values, and the mysterious quality of free will that defines our conscious experience. Her teaching philosophy, "connection before correction, connection before direction," offers practical wisdom for overwhelmed primary care providers trying to address mental health in brief appointments. Like shifting gears in a manual transmission, you need to match speeds with your patient before you can guide them anywhere. When people know you genuinely care and believe in their potential, magic happens—information flows naturally, and healing becomes possible.
